Eight ways to see the island

Every excursion below is private. One vehicle, one driver, one group, and a day that bends around what you actually want to do. Nothing is fixed until you say so.

The Seven Coloured Earths at Chamarel

South and Chamarel

Full day, about 8 hours 1 to 8 people Private

The classic first day. Volcanic colours, a waterfall, rum, and a long lunch somewhere with a view. Plenty of stops and not much walking.

  • Seven Coloured Earths
  • Chamarel waterfall
  • Rum distillery
  • Black River Gorges viewpoint
  • Grand Bassin, if you want it
  • Lunch stop of your choice
Book this tour Priced per vehicle, not per person. Entry tickets are extra.
White sand and turquoise water at Ile aux Cerfs

Ile aux Cerfs and the east

Full day, about 8 hours 1 to 8 people Private

A beach day with a boat in the middle of it. We drive you to the jetty, the boat takes you across, and we are waiting when you come back. The island is busy by eleven, so we leave early.

  • Boat transfer to the island
  • The full day on the sand
  • Grand River South East waterfall
  • Water sports, if you book them
  • Coastal drive home
  • Stop in Trou d'Eau Douce
Book this tour Boat is priced per person and booked separately.
The red-roofed chapel at Cap Malheureux

North tour

Half or full day 1 to 8 people Private

The easiest day on the list and the best one for a first afternoon. Short drives between stops, sheltered beaches, and the north is where the shops and restaurants are.

  • Cap Malheureux chapel
  • Grand Baie
  • Trou aux Biches beach
  • Pereybere
  • Mont Choisy
  • Sunset stop on the way back
Book this tour Half day available at a lower rate.
Le Morne Brabant rising above the lagoon

Le Morne and the west coast

Full day, about 8 hours 1 to 8 people Private

The best coastline on the island and the one people photograph most. A UNESCO site with a hard history behind the postcard, and the calmest water in Mauritius at the foot of it.

  • Le Morne Brabant viewpoints
  • Le Morne public beach
  • Tamarin bay
  • Flic en Flac
  • Casela, if you want it
  • Sunset on the west coast
Book this tour Priced per vehicle, not per person.
Temples beside the sacred lake at Grand Bassin

Grand Bassin and the highlands

Half or full day 1 to 8 people Private

Cooler, greener and much quieter than the coast. The crater lake is the most important Hindu site outside India, and the forest above it is where the island still looks wild.

  • Grand Bassin sacred lake
  • The Mangal Mahadev statue
  • Black River Gorges
  • Alexandra Falls viewpoint
  • Tea plantation
  • Curepipe, if there is time
Book this tour Dress modestly for the temple. Shoes come off.
The waterfront at Port Louis

Port Louis and the markets

Half day, about 5 hours 1 to 8 people Private

The working capital, not the tourist version. The central market in the morning, Chinatown for lunch, and the museum that explains why so many people here came from so many places.

  • Central market
  • Caudan Waterfront
  • Aapravasi Ghat
  • Chinatown
  • Blue Penny Museum
  • Fort Adelaide viewpoint
Book this tour Best on a weekday. The market is quiet on Sundays.
Giant water lilies at the Pamplemousses botanical garden

Pamplemousses and the north east

Half day, about 5 hours 1 to 8 people Private

One of the oldest botanical gardens in the southern hemisphere, with the giant water lilies everyone comes to see, then the sugar estate that explains most of the island's history.

  • Pamplemousses botanical garden
  • Giant Victoria water lilies
  • L'Aventure du Sucre
  • Chateau de Labourdonnais
  • Local rum and jam tasting
  • Beach stop on the way back
Book this tour A guide inside the garden is worth the extra. We arrange it.
Cliffs and open sea on the wild south coast

The wild south coast

Full day, about 8 hours 1 to 8 people Private

For people who have already done the postcard version. No reef on this side, so the sea comes straight in against the cliffs, and there are stretches where you will not see another car.

  • Gris Gris cliffs
  • La Roche qui Pleure
  • Le Souffleur
  • Riviere des Galets
  • Mahebourg waterfront
  • Blue Bay, for the snorkelling
Book this tour The sea is rough on this coast. Swimming only at Blue Bay.

Half of what we drive is not on this page. Give us a rough idea, how long you have and how much walking you are up for, and we will put a day together and send it back to you.
